LDA Design has won an international competition to redesign Blackpool’s 3.2km central promenade. Its proposals for the £21m ‘People’s Playground’ project is inspired by the otherworldliness of Gulliver’s Travels and the strange landscapes of Japanese animated films, creating a surreal dunescape. At dusk, a virtual landscape will emerge from the dunes, and high above it a spectacular and unique aerial light show, akin to the aurora borealis, will be created. LDA Design and its partners Speirs and Major Associates, lighting artist Chris Levine and Gardiner & Theobald will now work with regeneration company ReBlackpool to finalise the submission for funding from the Big Lottery’s Living Landmarks programme.
