Simplicity wins
The Civic Trust has announced the winners of the 2006 Civic Trust Awards and several landscape architecture and urban design projects have been praised.
82 environmental and architectural projects from across the UK’s cities have received recognition for their design excellence and community impact. In total, 29 projects have received an award (including seven sponsored awards), for their outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment, 34 projects have been commended and 19 projects have been given a mention for their cultural, social, or economic benefit.
Among the winners was Lyric Square in Hammersmith and Fulham, designed by Gross Max. The avant-garde Edinburgh-based firm won the sponsored Hard Landscaping Award and was praised for the transformation of a ‘dangerous and unpleasant road’ in to ‘a creatively-designed, much-needed vibrant space.’
Created using cream and Irish Blue limestone, detailed with a circle of black granite containing a cluster of twelve fountains, the scheme is clutter-free and clean. The design was complimented by the judges for the ground lights and stainless steel fittings which make the square a night-time space as well, and enhance the bespoke features, tree canopies and fountains.
