Controversy in Cardiff
Speaking at the Landscape Institute’s annual conference Sustainable Foundations for the Future, Peter Harper, of the Centre for Alternative Technology, gave a controversial speech entitled: Why I hate wind farms and think there should be more of them. His opinions sparked lively debate and a show of hands in the audience revealed that the delegates present had divided opinions on this political hot potato.
Both days of the conference (held on 15 and 16 March at the luxurious St David’s Hotel in Cardiff) were full of such energetic discussion and debate and the event was described by one delegate as being: “one of the best and liveliest that the LI has ever held,” and “by far the best conference of the past three years.”
Many interesting and thought-provoking speakers addressed the audience, exploring the complex issues surrounding sustainability. Some of the main arguments revolved around: the language we use to discuss sustainability; the importance of high-quality design; the role of planners; the need for improved communication between professions; the environment and climate change.
Chaired by John Humphrys, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the first day of the conference began with some intense and exciting debate. Humphrys’ powerful interrogational manner added sparkle and energy to the exchanges.
