Leadership call at LI conference
“The Climate Change Bill is a world first and deserves the support of environmental groups,” Rosie Manise, Natural England’s climate change and energy policy specialist, told the LI’s recent conference in Bristol. The one-day event entitled ‘Climate change: the challenge for landscape architecture’ was chaired by former LI director general Marion Bowman and served as a follow-up to last year’s annual conference in London, giving an update on the progress made in policy terms by both the Government and the Institute itself. In the opening address, Manise explained that some level of climate change was now inevitable, which meant that adaptation now needed greater emphasis in policymaking, particularly in relation to extreme weather conditions. She also stressed how greater effort needs to be invested in building up natural resilience – through effective water catchment and the protection of carbon sinks – and landscape connectivity. She said: “To survive and thrive, many UK species will need to move inland, uphill and north. They can’t do that if their habitats are isolated or their paths blocked.” CABE calls for ‘civilised’ streets A new report from CABE proposes that pedestrians’ needs should be prioritised over vehicles to ultimately create more freedom of movement on our streets.
