How many of those driving out of Doncaster on the A18 towards Scunthorpe realise that shortly after the road crosses the M180 and turns east they are passing between the largest areas of lowland raised mire in Britain? Thorne Moor to the north and Hatfield Moor to the south together make up nearly three-quarters of one of the largest lowland landscapes in the country - the 3,318ha Humberhead Peatlands - but this rich landscape came dangerously close to being lost forever.
