Czech Republic
The Czech Republic has 12 protected World Heritage Landscape sites in the UNESCO lists. They are mainly the settings for castles, medieval towns, churches and villages - historical Prague, the Kafkaesque heart of the country, is in a category apart. There are the landscapes of Lednice-Valtice, a 200km2 English-style romantic parkland created between the 17th and 20th centuries, and the Baroque gardens of KromerĂz Castle on the River Morava. These green sites need large budgets to be adequately conserved and the Czech Republic is a small country suffering all the disadvantages of a former eastern block economy getting to grips with global competition, and the attainment of professional qualifications compatible with international standards.
