In the UK, there is a folk ritual that tends to happen in spring. Called 'beating the bounds', it can be traced back for over two millennia. During the ritual, the members of the local community walk around the boundaries of their domain or parish, and as they pass certain landmarks (trees, stones, railings) they declaim, pray and even beat them with sticks.
