In the shadow of the past: the memorial issue
Who would be a memorial designer in this age? Where once there was the relative security of religious symbolism in a society of believers, now there is the challenge of satisfying the tensions, demands and outright dislikes of a part-multi-faith, part-agnostic, part-atheist, essentially secular society. Throw the pressures of health and safety and political correctness into that mix and designers face an almost impossible task to please a majority. Yet amid these pressures, there are still people who produce bold, inspiring and moving memorials. In this issue, we salute them.
