Estates of the nation: the housing issue
Housing has been kept off the UK’s political agenda for 20 years, but at last the Government has declared its intention to tackle the crisis in housing stock. The Green Paper’s pledge to build three million new homes – and particularly 45,000 new social homes a year by 2011 – is an astonishing shift in public policy. It is no longer an option to oppose the building of thousands of new homes – it is going to happen, and it is the job of landscape architects, masterplanners and urban designers to put themselves at the heart of the process to ensure the future quality of our habitats. We are being offered a once-in-a-generation opportunity to design new towns – we must rise to the challenge.
