Past, Present & Future

Past

The Landscape Institute was formed in 1929 as The Institute of Landscape Architects. In 1978, following the decision to broaden the membership to include those whose professional work involved landscape management and landscape sciences, the name changed to The Landscape Institute. In 1997 the Institute was granted a Royal Charter.

Present

There are around 5,000 members practising in the UK. For the Landscape Institute it is a time of growth and expansion. As public realm becomes ever more highly valued, fostering harmony between the built environment and public space is increasingly important. To further this aim, the LI is active in lobbying and policy consultation at both national and devolved government level. We have an active events programme of national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. Hosting the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) World Congress in 2005, is just another example of the Institute's work.

Future

The LI will continue to grow its membership and cultivate the services offered to the wider community. The specialist, multidisciplinary role of the landscape architect will be an asset to society as the interaction between people and place changes and design and management go hand in hand. The LI aims to place the landscape architect at the heart of the built environment and public realm. In collaboration with external partners, the LI will raise the public profile of landscape architects and the importance of coherent design.
