Work is now underway on the Jo Yeates Garden. A planting day took place on May 13th and the aim is to formally open the garden later this summer. Thank you to all who have contributed, and it is warming to know that without
your kind donations this fitting tribute to Jo would not have been realised.
Members of the Landscape Institute South East Branch decided to create a garden in celebration of the life of Jo Yeates, the young Bristol landscape architect who was so tragically killed in December 2010.
The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum at Ampfield in Hampshire agreed to accommodate this in a beautiful setting overlooking the lake. The Landscape Institute and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens worked in collaboration to design, implement and maintain this garden, which is in an appropriate place, as Jo worked there in her student days and it is close to her parents' home.
The design, which has been agreed by Mr and Mrs Yeates and the Arboretum, is based on the flowing shape of a butterfly wing which will be expressed in the form of paving and a sculptural timber seat embraced with grasses and wildflowers. As a student Jo designed a butterfly garden and wildflowers were close to her heart. This will be given its own special context with new path links and shrubs and a tree to be chosen by Jo’s parents. It is a concept and theme that we believe is in tune with Jo’s likes and personality and will become a place that can be enjoyed by anyone.
We do hope that you will make a donation to fund the construction of the garden. The design and illustration have been given free of charge by members. All funds will be used in Jo’s memory: if more is received than is needed for the garden, the rest will be used to endow a placement for a landscape student in the Arboretum.
